Why should we engage in mission efforts outside of Etowah County? Scripture clearly indicates that the task that we have been given [the great commission] is not an either/or proposition, rather a both/and task. Simply put, we have been called to take the Gospel to the world. I believe that begins at home and extends to the rest of the world. To say that a person who happens to be blessed to possess a US birth certificate is more worthy of one’s resources and efforts contradicts God’s Word that proclaims all men to be of great value. A person’s value lies in the fact that they are a creation of God, not their race, gender, socioeconomic status, or place of birth. It is a fact that 95% of the theologically trained evangelical Christians are in the US ministering to 5% of the world’s population. Add to that the fact that God has blessed this country with resources that people in other parts of the world can’t even begin to imagine. Whether it is Etowah County or New Orleans, Louisiana or Central Asia or the jungles of Africa is not the issue: the question at hand is whether or not you are taking advantage of the opportunities before you to reach people for the Kingdom of God. After all, isn’t that what God expects from each of us?
